Stretch (Until I Turn into Fragments), 2019

Photography is an extension of human body’s experience in both time and space context.

In the aspect of time, we were surrounded by a world full of moving images and objects. Photography is a medium which captures a specific moment of time, making a moving scene become a still image, or even an object for people to observe.

I captured the image of my skin and a blanket I have been using since I was small, observing the shadows and light created on the both items under the sunlight. I captured the scene with a lomokino - which is supposed to be a video camera for 35mm film. The frame of35 film was spilt into 4 parts, showing the 4 images captured in a moment in ascending order. Instead of making it into a video, I tried to put them all in a square collage, showing an ascending timeline to the audience to observe the flow of time, breaking down a flow oftime into small image pieces.

When it comes to the film photography, it gives more control for us to experiment during the processing. I collected some sea water, mixing the developer and fixer with it during the film processing. I am doing this not just for trying to create special visual effect, but also acting as a tribute to a late senior who has her ashes spread into the sea. The seawater will stay on the film itself which contains the images of me bodily. I hope it can create a layer of meaning that we meet each other again through photography.
